Two seven-year-old children airlifted to hospital after a smash on the M54 remain in a critical condition in hospital today.

Nine people were injured – including the boy and girl – during the crash close to the Albrighton junction on Thursday, which involved a lorry and three other vehicles.

The driver of the lorry has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The girl, named as Lauren Bale, from Warwickshire, was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital along with her brother, Edward Bale. Both had suffered serious injuries.

Lee Page, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “The children remained in a serious condition in hospital over the weekend.”

Police said the children were in a car driven by their mother when the accident happened. Both carriageways were closed to deal with the accident, which happened at about 4.20pm.

Chris Kowalik, for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said the girl was anaesthetised before being flown to hospital and the boy suffered leg, facial and abdominal injuries.

A third child in the car was taken to Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital, along with the children’s mother. A man and a woman in another car were taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital. Information to police on (0121) 6261285.
