Fire team’s call for new members
Sunday 7th August 2011, 11:30AM BST.
An SOS call has gone out for more people to sign up as retained firefighters at a station near Shrewsbury.
Officials at Minsterley Fire Station are hoping to attract new members to the team, which has just 10 recruits dealing with 130 emergency calls a year.
The current team is made up of men and women of all ages who live within minutes of the station. All have normal daytime jobs and have regular training so they are ready to attend emergency call-outs.
Among its recruits is 45-year-old construction site manager Russell Goodwin, who has been a retained firefighter for four years. Another member of the team is Shaun Groves, 39, a self-employed builder who renovates barns. He has been a retained firefighter for 18 years.
Mr Groves said: “Being a firefighter is an important job and we both really enjoy it.”
The recruitment drive comes as the fire station is set to hold an open day on August 21 following an upgrade.
Firefighters will be on hand to show members of the public how they train, what equipment they use and to give them a tour of the refurbished station.
Retained support officer Mel Kapitanec said: “We want to show the people of Minsterley their local fire station and to meet their firefighters who do a tremendous job.
“They are all retained firefighters who give up their time to protect their community. They are all highly skilled firefighters.”
The open day will run between noon and 4pm and will allow members of the public to have a first-hand look at the new training room, office, kitchen, washroom and garage at the station.
For more information about becoming a retained firefighter, call Shrewsbury fire headquarters on (01743) 260200, e-mail recruitment@shropshirefire.gov.uk or turn up at the open day on August 21.
