Devoted pair married for 60 years
Sunday 7th August 2011, 11:30AM BST.
A Telford couple described as being “devoted to one another” have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Elsie and Ken Roberts, who are both 85, married at Oakengates Congregational Church on August 4, 1951.
They now live in Hartshill Avenue, in Oakengates.
Mr Roberts is a familiar face to many a weary traveller as for all his working life he was the clerk at Oakengates and then Telford Central Railway stations.
He was born in Oakengates near to the railway station in a house that has long since been demolished.
His sister, Renee, married Elsie’s brother Fred.
Mrs Roberts was born in New Row, a group of houses in the Hinkshay area of Dawley, as Elsie Jackson.
New Row has long since gone, being demolished as part of the Dawley New Town and Telford Town Park developments of the 1960s and ’70s
She was one of five children.
Mrs Roberts stayed at home raising their three children, Barbara, Jennifer and Nigel but also worked in a domestic capacity at RAF Cosford.
The couple now have five grandchildren and find it hard to believe that 60 years have passed since their wedding in 1951.
Both say that they have enjoyed the years together and would happily do it all again.
Jennifer Simmonds, their daughter who lives in Ketley Bank, said: “Both mum and dad have been the best of parents who are clearly devoted to one another.
“No-one could wish for more generous and loving parents and grandparents.”
