This wacky vegetable is the latest to come out of the garden of Shropshire pensioner Fred Coxill.

The 85-year-old was surprised by the strange shaped potato he dug up at his Wellington home.

The pensioner, of St Chad’s Close, said the potato looked to him like a pair of legs.

He said: “I dug it up in my garden on Friday. I thought it looked very unusual.

“I have not done anything specific to grow it. I use chicken manure in my garden.

“My step-daughter, Margaret Brown, came on Sunday morning and she thought it was unusual.”

Mr Coxill, who has been married for about 25 years to Doreen, said he had been gardening since he had left school.

He said: “I have always been very interested in gardening. I worked on a farm for 25 years then went to the sugar beet factory and then came to live in Wellington.”

Currently he is growing beetroot, leeks and lettuce as well as the potatoes.

Last year Mr Coxill dug up a teddy bear-shaped potato and then a jelly baby-shaped spud a few weeks later. They are the latest examples of “Frankenstein food” to come to light in Shropshire. The Shropshire Star has highlighted other weird finds such as a carrot which looked like a hand, and became centre of attention on a Japanese website.
