Delight at Burwarton Show success
Friday 5th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
The new chairman of the Burwarton Show today said he was delighted with the “unprecedented” level of interest in this year’s record-breaking event.
Richard Yates said there were bumper entries throughout the livestock categories, held in the biggest arena in the show’s history. The number of sheep was also up by 50 per cent, with 12,000 entries in total.
Mr Yates said: “We had a tremendous day. We have revamped our livestock area to help cope with the unprecedented demand, both from visitors and participants.
“Sheep entries are up by 50 per cent and we have pigs for the first time in about 60 years and they have been a major success. The crowd has been 10-deep around the pigs enclosure at times.
“We’ve spent £50,000 over the last three years to improve the infrastructure here.”
Mr Yates had a difficult start to his big day yesterday, with his prize charollais sheep making a bid for freedom when he arrived on the Cleobury North site at dawn.
His father Henry Yates, who manned the microphone in the main arena, said: “It managed to get free somehow and headed straight towards the Brown Clee.
“But it was caught going in the car park and returned to the show where it competed in the sheep categories.”
