Private firm chosen for Shrewsbury lights
Friday 5th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A private firm has been selected to manage Shrewsbury’s Christmas lights this winter as part of an overhaul of the town’s annual display.
A meeting of the recreation and leisure committee of Shrewsbury Town Council on Wednesday agreed to pass on responsibility for the managing of the lights to French-based company Blachere Illuminations.
Councillor Miles Kenny, who attended this week’s meeting, said the council was expecting to spend £40,000 on using Blachere’s lights.
“We are going to go with Blachere because they had the best display.
“This is about the local economy – if you don’t have anything at all or have the same lights looking a bit grubby we are not doing the traders any favours,” said Councillor Kenny.
