Rain fails to dampen Burwarton Show spirit
Thursday 4th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
The Burwarton Show became a sea of umbrellas and rain jackets as heavy showers hit the showground today.
Visitors remained in a buoyant mood despite the increasingly wet conditions at the show in Cleobury North, near Bridgnorth.
Henry Yates, who organises publicity for the show, said: “It will not put anyone off. We are made of hardy stuff at the Burwarton Show.”
Queues built up this morning to get into the south Shropshire showground, with organisers praying the rain would hold off and avoid putting a dampener on the event.
A new pigs class has been created for the event this year, which has also reported record entries in the sheep category.
Livestock manager Richard Morgan said: “We’re all hoping it will run smoothly now and I’ll be much more relaxed by the end of the day.”
A scarecrow trail has been launched for the first time at this event with families following maps to find 43 scarecrows dotted around the showground.
George Billington, 14, from 63 Squadron Air Cadets in Bridgnorth, said: “We camped here last night and it’s just so exciting. I’m especially looking forward to the grand parade. There is something for everyone at Burwarton.”
This year’s event is expected to raise thousands of pounds for charities including The Stroke Association and Cancer Research UK.
