Busiest day for Shropshire’s two A&Es
Thursday 4th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Casualty departments at Shropshire’s two hospitals experienced their busiest day ever last month, it was revealed today.
Now bosses of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital, have issued a plea for people only to use the services in emergencies.
Officials said July 11 was the busiest day for the A&E departments in the trust’s history.
Spokesman Andy Rogers said: “Our emergency departments, including A&E at Shrewsbury and Telford and the Acute Referral Centre, saw a total of 404 patients.
“Despite the incredibly high demand for services our staff still managed to see, assess, treat and discharge or transfer 97.7 per cent of those patients within four hours.”
The news comes as a report to last week’s trust board meeting showed it was under-performing on its June and year-to-date figures for patients facing no longer than a four hour wait in A&E.
