Shropshire Council chiefs may rethink discount bid
Wednesday 3rd August 2011, 6:01PM BST.
Council chiefs in Shropshire have agreed to reconsider plans to remove a rates discount currently in place for charity shops – a move which could save them having to pay out thousands of pounds extra.
Last year Shropshire Council agreed that its discretionary lower rates for charity shops in the town should be scrapped, with the ruling set to come into effect in April next year. But the decision is now being reconsidered.
The council’s cabinet is set to rule on whether it should still go ahead in the autumn.
It follows a campaign by Roger Evans, Shropshire councillor for Longden, who is calling for the reduced rates to remain in place in order to support charity shops already facing difficulties because of the current financial climate.
Councillor Evans said he was concerned charities were being asked to do more, while facing reductions in income.
