A Shropshire mother today claimed she was being forced to live in her bedroom with her eight-month-old child – after alleging that builders ripped up her house and left without finishing the job.

Sarah Gordon, 27, called her insurance company to fix a leak under her kitchen sink nearly two months ago which had spread under the ground floor. After fixing the leak the builders told her they noticed asbestos under the floor which would have to be taken out.

But she claimed the builders, hired by her insurance company, Sheila’s Wheels, left the job unfinished after spending a week ripping out the downstairs floor of her home in Randlay, Telford.

Mrs Gordon said mould had spread from the burst pipe around the kitchen units, forcing her and her son Bradley to live in an upstairs bedroom because the pair could have a serious allergic reaction to the spores.

She said: “On June 12 we came downstairs and found all the laminate flooring bubbling up. The emergency cover came out from our insurers and found it was a pipe leaking behind the sink.

“They stopped the leak and about a week later we had the damp people come and pull the floors up. When they were here they said they had found asbestos in the floors.”

Mrs Gordon added: “About a week later they came to test for asbestos and said we would have the results in 48 hours. Two weeks later we got them.

“They found the asbestos was as safe as it could be.

“The asbestos was cleared and finally I thought I would get my ground floor back.

“But the builder then said there would be a delay of around six weeks because of their heavy workload.

“And yesterday they cancelled again for another week.”

She said: “We can’t spend a lot of time downstairs because of our allergies and I can’t let Bradley crawl around. I’m concerned about this stunting his development and him falling ill.”

Asia Yasir, spokeswoman for Shelia’s Wheels, said: “We are sorry for any delay and are looking into this as a matter of urgency.

“There may be underlying issues with the floor such as it still being too damp to work on.”
