Shrewsbury Town ‘near top of league for cost’
Tuesday 2nd August 2011, 1:27PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town is among the top five most expensive clubs to watch in League Two and charges more than some top-flight teams, according to a new survey by the BBC.
The team, which plays in the basement division in the Football League, came fifth bottom out of the 24 clubs in their division for the cheapest day out. Clubs were asked to give details of their cheapest and most expensive matchday adult tickets,
They were also asked for the prices for a cup of tea, a programme, and a pie to work out the price of enjoying a day at the football for fans without season tickets.
The cost of a ticket to a match at the Greenhous Meadow stadium varied between £17 and £22, compared to the least expensive club Rotherham United, where fans can see a match for £10 and the highest-priced ticket is £18.
Shrewsbury fans also have to fork out when it comes to food and drink at games, with pies costing £3 and a cup of tea £1.50.
Meanwhile, as with the majority of clubs in the league, any fans who want to buy a programme have to pay £3.
Only three teams, Hereford, Macclesfield and Rotherham, had lower prices for programmes, at £2.50 each.
When the figures were added up, the survey suggested that the cheapest day out at the Greenhous Meadow cost £24.60.
This put Shrewsbury fifth highest in terms of cost in League Two, behind only Southend, Gillingham, Swindon and Bradford.
The latter club had the most expensive day out, with fans having to pay out £27.80 on average.
Rotherham United offered the cheapest prices to see a match, with the cost of a ticket, programme, pie and cup of tea available for £16.30.
The cost of going to a Shrewsbury Town game for a non-season ticketholder is actually more expensive than attending some Premier League matches, with Wigan and Blackburn offering a day out at a match for £21.60 and £17.50 respectively.
Wolves is among the cheapest clubs to watch in the top flight with the survey stating it is possible to go to a game and spend £28.
The survey comes ahead of the start of the Football League season this weekend, which attracted more than 16 million fans to games across its three divisions last season.
No one from Shrewsbury Town was available for comment on the figures.

You can’t put a price on disappointment

You can get your money back if the pie or tea are not of a sufficient quality, however you are not allowed a refund when the team is inferior, now there’s a surprise

Near the top for prices. And the most unsuccessful team for trophies in the whole 4 divisions.

Um…ranked 67th out of 92 John. Which is not fantastic but not bad for a small market town.
Your grasp of numbers and statistics is phenomenol though….have you ever considered putting it to better use? Maybe chairing the Office for National Statistics, instead of making everyone down the pub roll their eyes and shuffle backwards?

One 3rd division championship cup in all their years in the football league. really impressive!!!!!!!
Ranked 67th out of 92. 67th from the top and 25 from the bottom. But of what?

“Shuffle Backwards” A Good description of the team. Great.

Great news. Hopefully something will now be done about this. Especially with the dreadful attendances for overpriced and media deceiving friendlies against top flight youth teams.

Shrewsbury appear to be the Arsenal of Division 2. Dearest tickets, food, programs, drink……. yet continual under achievement on the pitch, and not very many new quality additions to the side to show for everyones hard earned money paid in every saturday.

Well – apart from the fact that Shrewsbury are NOT the most expensive team in league 2 that is a very insightful comment. Thanks for sharing.
I also hadn’t realise that press gangs were roaming the streets forcing you to attend matches and spend your “hard earned money” against your will. I’d report that kind of thing to the police Glen if I were you.

I’m a season ticket holder at the town, £270 for 23 matches, works out to just about £11.74 a game, not exactly expensive to be honest

@John Jones
‘And the most unsuccessful team for trophies in the whole 4 divisions’.
Is that a fact? I don’t think so, besides Shrewsbury have won the old Division Three in 1979 and the ‘new’ (at the time) Division Three in 1994. They’ve also won numerous Welsh Cups – I don’t think you have a clue what you’re talking about.
Ten years in the old Division Two was also some feat considering for a fairly small club like Town,
They’ve also played at Wembley twice in the past four years – something that is the envy of many a bigger club.
The amount of money you are able to bring in dictates, to a large extent, how successful you can be, and while I don’t welcome some of the commercial decisions the club have taken (the above point about misleadingly advertised friendlies is fair enough), sneering about a lack of success misses the point.
Most clubs will win nothing for seasons on end, but supporting clubs like Shrewsbury isn’t about glory hunting.
It’s about a passion and affinity for your home town club. You’ll probably never understand.

not many football supporters on here, too many moaners who do not appreciate watching football from the comfort of a new stadium. i travelled up from devon last april to watch the shrews. £11 for a pensioners admission, fantastic refreshments and another win for town. the shrews normally have a home attendance of about 5000, not bad for league 2
it is time the moaners shut up and the rest of us get behind a classy club with a class act manager and squad.
well done rowland wycherley and your board of directors for providing englands premier borough with first class football facilities. come and watch shrews play in their retro amber and blue stripes in a most comfortable stadium
one thing rowland can you please get rid of that ruddy awful pop art lion badge. lions are for longleat not shrewsbury. please may we have our traditional 3 loggerheads badge with a floreat salopia back please
even down in devon i am mighty proud of shrewsbury town football club and its new stadium. it is a pleasure to visit the club now and again and remember there are some championship and league 1 clubs who would like a stadium like ours.
so come on you shrews floreat salopia, quit moaning, and rowland change that ruddy awful badge

Arthur. I should have said two titles, the 1st in 1978-79 season with 61 points and stayed for 10 years, as they only stayed a couple of years in the 90s I forgot. The Welsh Cups say no more. When I think of the teams that used to play on the Gay Meadow that have gone on to higher divisions, whilst Shrewsbury has had very little success, Swansea for example a regular team at the Meadow now in the premier league,or Carlisle The only team that has been in all positions in the 4 divisions eg.( top of the 1st to bottom of the 4th,and all positions in-between) The Town has been to Wembley twice loosing twice, up the road at Wellington (Telford) they have also been at Wembley, lost the first year won the second.I’m lost on your remark, you say your not “glory hunting”, I thought that was the idea of supporting your team, so your quite content to see them in the 4th division.
