Jobs lost as Oswestry leisure complex closes
Tuesday 2nd August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A £2m leisure and entertainment complex in Oswestry has closed just months after opening.
One member of staff said employees had turned up for work at the Mclarens Complex and been told they no longer had a job.
It is not known how many people were employed at Mclarens in the former railway buildings off Gobowen Road.
The complex first opened in spring but today it was revealed a decision has been made to close its doors because “it is not viable”.
It is hoped the site will re-open in the future but a date was not yet known.
Bosses say the business, inside the old buildings, has been mothballed due to the amount of work required to meet Shropshire Council building regulations.
A spokesman said: “There is a huge amount of work required. Everything is shut now until work is completed. It is a decision by the owners themselves because it is not viable.”
He said: “The building is 150 years old and it took more than expected to bring up to the standards required.”
He said that employees had been paid.
Shropshire Council’s Ian Maddox, building control manager, said they were still in talks with the owner and offering them extensive advice on how to meet the acquires building and safety recommendations.
