Eco-friendly dog centre opens in Telford
Tuesday 2nd August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A dog centre said to be the most eco-friendly in the world opened its doors for the first time today following a £5 million-plus transformation.
The 30-acre Dogs Trust Shrewsbury centre in Roden, Telford, has the capacity to home 156 stray and abandoned dogs at any one time and has been built by contractors McPhillips.
Bosses at the centre said £5.25 million had been spent installing frosted glass fronted kennels, dog socialising and training areas, a birthing room and an on-site vet area.
The buildings are also fitted with dozens of solar panels, a biomass boiler, a grass and wildflower roof and rainwater harvesting technology. Manager Louise Campbell, 39, said she was delighted the centre had finally opened.
She said: “I’ve been here for six years and this redevelopment is fantastic.
“It’s the greenest dog centre in the world and one of the biggest in the country. I’m over the moon about it.”
The opening ceremony included visits from Dogs Trust chairman Philip Daubeny, and Mark Pritchard MP who were given a guided tour of the centre.
Mr Pritchard said: “This is a superb centre and it is fantastic to see it finally open.”
