It happened in Caersws, near Newtown.
Emergency services were called to the scene at about 3pm yesterday after reports a youngster had been crushed by a goalpost.
The boy, who has not yet been named but is believed to be from the Caersws area, was taken to hospital where he died.
Dyfed-Powys Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating.
Officers today described it as a “tragic accident” and said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
Detective Inspector Ian Andrews, for Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “Police are investigating the sad death of a 12-year-old boy in Caersws, near Newtown, on July 29. Why oh why is this still happening when it is so preventable. My son Jonathan died over 20 years ago and I have campaigned ever since for better safery measures. When will people realise that goalposts have to be secured safely, my heart goes out to the family and friends. The government and the FA need to do more, this is a world wide problem, when will anyone listen.
