Car left on its side after hitting wall in Hanwood, near Shrewsbury
Friday 29th July 2011, 5:10PM BST.
A car was left overturned in the middle of a road after smashing into a wall in front of two properties in a village near Shrewsbury.
The incident occurred at about 4.30am yesterday in Hanwood causing such a loud bang one resident feared a train may have derailed.
Following the crash, which involved a Ford Fiesta, a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
He has been released on police bail as investigations continue.
Justin Evans, whose home was one of those affected by the incident, said he was awoken by the sound of the crash.
He said he had been shocked by what had happened right outside his property and saw the damage from inside his home before going outside to take a closer look.
“It hit close to our house and our next door neighbours.
“The wall outside the house was completely demolished,” he said.
“We have got a railway line behind the house and I thought a train had derailed, it was a God-almighty noise.
“The car was on its side on the road.”
Mr Evans said he had stayed up after the incident and had managed to clear up most of the mess caused in his front yard by the accident.
Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “We were notified at 4.35am on Thursday morning there had been and incident where a car had left the road and crashed into a wall at Bridge Cottages in Hanwood.
“The vehicle ended up on its side and about 30ft of brick wall was damaged. The car was a silver Ford Fiesta and the driver, a 20-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and subsequently given police bail pending further inquiries.”
