Anger at Church Stretton flag thefts

Flags and banners put up around Church Stretton by volunteers to celebrate major events and add colour to the town are being repeatedly stolen, volunteers claimed today.

Chris Kolvin, who has helped put up the decorations for four years, said he was “incredibly frustrated” to have seen three more flags stolen since Sunday.

Flags were also taken earlier this year during the town’s Summerfest event and banners have previously disappeared, he said.

Mr Kolvin suspected drunken young people were behind the thefts, which he has reported to police.

He said: “These flags are paid for by town businesses and from the pocket of another volunteer, John Woolmer, who I help to put them up.

“We have Union flags, St George’s flags and also flags from other countries which give a bit of colour to the town during events like the arts festival which is going on at the minute. It’s incredibly frustrating that people are stealing them, and it is not the first time. They have been taken in previous years, too.”

Mr Kolvin said he was considering placing collection tins in some shops to help buy new flags.

West Mercia Police confirmed it had received a report yesterday of a flag being stolen from outside the Spar shop in Sandford Avenue in Church Stretton.

Anyone with information is urged to call Ludlow police station on 03003 333000.
