Shrewsbury Riverside plans should help overhaul bus station, says MP
Wednesday 27th July 2011, 3:23PM BST.
Developers planning to build a £150 million shopping complex in the heart of Shrewsbury should help to overhaul the town’s “dilapidated” bus station as part of the project, the town’s MP has claimed.
Tory Daniel Kawczynski said he had recently spoken with the team behind the plans to knock down and rebuild the Riverside Shopping Centre and link it to refurbished versions of the Pride Hill and Darwin malls.
He said he was in favour of the plans – on condition the bus station in Raven Meadows was also improved as part of the overhaul.
“I’m obviously very excited about Shrewsbury attracting £150 million in investment, it will be a huge boost for the town,” Mr Kawczynski said.
“From what I have seen of the plans so far, I think it looks very nice. Broadly speaking, I’m in favour – on the condition that if the developers are given this opportunity, you can’t end up with a state-of-the-art shopping mall next to a dilapidated 1970s style bus station,” he said.
He will now send a letter to the developers, as well as Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, and Peter Nutting, leader of Shrewsbury Town Council, to suggest it to them.
According to feedback from Shrewsbury shoppers at an exhibition on the plans held almost 90 per cent are in favour of the mall plan.
