Shrewsbury’s Quarry paddling pool to stay closed for much of summer
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 11:22AM BST.
A Shrewsbury town centre paddling pool, which is locked up for maintenance work, may be off-limits for much of the summer holidays.
Scores of youngsters hoping to use the pool on the first day of their school summer break yesterday were left disappointed when they found the pool was shut “until further notice”.
A spokesman for Shropshire Council said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working to reopen it (the pool) as soon as possible.
“However, we do not anticipate this being resolved immediately due to the work required.
“The issue is that the fibreglass needs to be repaired.”
Former mayor of Shrewsbury Judith Williams said she was disappointed with the closure of the pool after taking her two grandchildren and two of their friends down to use it.
“For six weeks of the year, it is not too difficult to organise,” she said.

Why are there always such unreasonable delays with pretty much everything within the public sector? I’m sure that within a few hours I could arrange a number of quotes for the job and get a team on-site doing the repairs within a few days!
Its the same story at the PRH maternity unit. The water-birth pool that has been leaking for months has been taken out of commission recently. The midwives don’t know when it will be replaced, but its expected to be many months if not longer! Again, I’m sure that within a couple of hours this issue could have a confirmed date to be resolved.
….. I wouldn’t dream of treating my customers that badly!!!

Ridiculous Council – they could have done repairs before the summer holidays. Fibreglass is a quick fix material isn’t it? So what’s the problem?
Keeping it closed will mean no cost of a lifeguard in an amenity with no income. The Council cannot charge admission because of a condition of the original land donation.
So why not just make it clear that it is unsupervised.Like most of the sea, lakes, rivers….

Beacause as soon as an incident happens people will scream blue murder about it not being safe or supervised.
A lot of parents these days are already too quick to blame others already without adding to it.
The lesson here is that if you don’t want things like this to be cut back then don’t vote tory.

all the parties would be making cuts only those on the political extremes that wish us to go bankrupt wouldn’t.

There must be half a dozen local companies who are more than capable of carrying out the necessary work who are reading this article in utter frustration because they won’t even get a look in.
Why don’t one of these disappointed members of the public step in to run it?!
Love it!!
Ahh you think it would be that simple , they would put that many hurdles in your way we would have entered the next ice age before they said yep go run it.
Least it could then become a skating rink – assuming the jobsworths didn’t mind!
Skating rink, don’t be silly, people might fall over!

Again we see more incompetence by the public sector who believe that they are worthy of better pay and conditions. Were a private company running this pool, they would go out of business for the lack of forethought into the necessary repairs in time for it’s busiest period.
Once again Salop Council shows that it couldn’t run a pub crawl.
Were a private company running it then it wouldn’t be a FREE service would it?
Once again you’ve managed to roadrun off your mouth without engaging your brain.
Well done shropshire council, another well planned and managed job!!!!!!
I can’t understand where the repair is needed, the water has been in the pool since last year, to me it just needs a good scrub. A job for the people on community service perhaps.
no money in open pool, they would rather spend money on cars for traffic wardens to go around the local streets and issue tickets.
More incompetence from out pathetic council – I wouldn’t trust them to run a bath
Report abuse
It will cut down on noise for local residents though.

The pool is nothing compared with our multi million theatre, which now looks like a RUNDOWN BREWERY.
In two weeks time we have a great flower show here, and our usless councillors cannnot put either of these problems right. Is it possble the Flower Show folks can do something about the pool?
what put flowers in it, im sure its closed during the flower show for its all fenced off. and wasnt the paddling pool open for a week and being used. im sure I saw it open while travelling to work. so there must of been clean water in it and there must be a problem for it to be closed. surely if there is a problem the water system will be off and this would be the reason why the water is dirty. I wonder if there was a charge to use it how many would. Try supporting the Quarry Pool rather than being a moaning, complaining culture or have you all got nothing better to do!!!!!.
for an example went to sainsbury being polite to the till operator person behind tapping their watch come on !!!

sorry Driver was not a personal gripe at you

Hey the pool may not be finished for summer, but at least the council finished the Heathgates roundabout, priorities..
(Rolls eyes with sarcasm!)
Mr Magoo, Heathgates roundabout, please use it’s proper name ” WEED ISLAND”

Stop press…contractor at the pool Friday.
Don’t you just get annoyed at all the talk about cutbacks affecting services when the council have clearly recently replaced the Park&Ride buses and I have noticed quite a few new council vans in operation.
As for spending money on office moves and purchasing Ipads, which is supposed to save money…Do they think the public are stupid?
Don’t get me started!!.

Mr Angry
Unless I am corrected, I think you will find Arriva have paid for the replacement buses, albeit they probably used the millions the council gave them to move from the existing site to a new one at Battlefield…..?

Im sure you all know what your talking about, running it I would love to see were you would start. please could I come along and watch and complain about everything just like the general public
