The grounds of Weston Park were transformed into a sea of pink as thousands of women turned out to raise money for charity.

Organisers of the Race for Life said they had had a brilliant turnout for the event held over the weekend at the stately home, near  Shifnal.

Emily Thompson, Race for Life event manager, said it was the second year running that the event had been held in the grounds.

She said: “It was brilliant. The atmosphere and the weather were absolutely fantastic. There were no traffic problems and no parking problems. It was perfect, really good days.”

Among those taking part was a team from radio station The Severn.

Vanessa Russell, Laura Stanley and Lucy Hounsell, who are part of the sales team, and Danny Wozencroft and Ruth Griffiths, who are part of the news team, had aimed to raise £500 for charity.

But Vanessa, of Telford, said as of today they had raised £640 after completing the 10k event, which was held on Saturday.

She said: “We are really pleased. None of us are runners. We all had our own pace and all started together and all finished at different times.

Guest of honour at the event was Penny Stanton, of Cannock, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer eight months ago.

Penny, who set off the participants at the Cancer Research UK Race supported by Tesco, took part in the event with her daughters Jessica and Danielle as well as her mum, Vivien Stanton.
