Mr Tickle turns 40 in Shropshire village of Ticklerton
Monday 25th July 2011, 3:46PM BST.
Scores of youngsters turned out to help Mr Tickle celebrate his 40th birthday in his namesake Shropshire village Ticklerton.
The cartoon character, one of the iconic Mr Men, visited the village, near Church Stretton, yesterday at the end of the three-day 157-mile Mr Tickle Charity Bike Ride, which had got under way in Giggleswick in Yorkshire.
He was greeted by a crowd made up of young and old alike in Shropshire and shared hugs with some of his fans.
The event was organised by the Egmont publishing firm, which hopes to raise £30,000 for the Springboard for Children with the charity cycle. So far more than £11,800 has been raised on the appeal’s Just Giving website.
All the cash raised by Mr Tickle and his team will be used to help charity staff launch their services in a new school. Cartoonist Adam Hargreaves, son of original Mr Men cartoonist Roger Hargreaves, has commissioned a one-off illustration to mark the charity ride and to celebrate Mr Tickle’s 40th birthday.
Springboard for Children said the cash raised by the event would provide an important boost to British schoolchildren.
Grateful
David Riley, managing director of Egmont Publishing Group, said: “Mr Tickle’s 40th birthday offers Egmont a unique opportunity to support children’s literacy in the UK, a subject very close to our hearts.
“Our company exists to inspire children to read and we are very grateful for the kind donations made by members of the public.”
