Shropshire MPs’ expenses revealed
Friday 22nd July 2011, 9:00PM BST.
MPs across Shropshire cost the taxpayer £533,205 in the last year.
New figures showing how much it cost MPs to run their offices in the financial year 2010/11 have been laid bare for the first time by officials at the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.
The figures also include each MPs’ overall expenditure for staffing and accommodation.
The costs for running their constituency office, general administration and travel and living expenses between May 7, 2010, and March 31, 2011 were also included.
The annual totals – released by Parliament’s new expenses watchdog on its website – do not include their £65,738 basic salary, any ministerial salaries, loans, or cash deposits for accommodation or extra payments for chairing parliamentary committees or other paid parliamentary duties.
Nationally, MPs claimed £70m – down from £98m under the old scheme in 2009/10.
Claims by county MPs were controversy free.
Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski received the highest amount – £125,597.82 – the majority of which was spent on staff costs.
The Shrewsbury and Atcham MP also received a £4,000 advance, provided to assist MPs with cash flow as required with their duties, and which must be paid back in full at the end of the parliamentary year.
He also claimed £2,007.66 for his London accommodation deposit – which must also be repaid once it is returned.
The MP who cost taxpayers the least was Mark Pritchard, who received £94,734 .
The Wrekin MP also claimed a £4,000 loan.
North Shropshire MP and Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson received £103,369.84.
In addition to his MP’s wage, he also received a £79,754 ministerial salary.
Telford Labour MP David Wright received £111,098.18.
Ludlow MP Philip Dunne received £98,405.66.
As well as his salary, he is also entitled to £26,624 as an assistant Government whip – but is one of two Tory ministers who do not receive a ministerial salary because of extra Lib Dem government posts. “I am taking a sacrifice for the Coalition in the national interest,” he said.
Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies received £120,197.14, and also claimed £1,980 for his London accommodation deposit.
Details of the relatives who work for MPs – and how much they are paid – were also released by Ipsa. They showed that Mr Paterson, who employs his wife Rose as a senior parliamentary assistant, paid her a salary of £30,000 to £34,999.
Meanwhile Mr Pritchard paid his wife and office manager Sondra, £35,500 to £39,999.
