Mid Wales crime is down, new figures claim
Friday 22nd July 2011, 1:51PM BST.
Crime in Mid Wales is down by almost 500 offences, new figures have revealed today. It comes as Dyfed-Powys Police revealed it would not be reducing the number of officers on the beat.
This is despite Government spending cuts. But up to 165 other police jobs could be lost over the next four years to met a £9.5 million cut to the force’s budget.
Findings by the British Crime Survey showed the number of crimes recorded in the Dyfed-Powys force area have fallen from 32,924 to 32,425 in the 2010/11 financial year.
Ian Arundale, chief constable of Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “It is very pleasing once again to note that the trend of falling recorded crime in our area during recent years has continued during the most recent financial year.
“Dyfed-Powys Police remains the lowest crime area across England and Wales while at the same time it is the most successful in terms of detecting crimes.
“This means that there are less victims of crime in our communities.
“There are many reasons why we have been able to achieve these successes – for example we have excellent support from partners such as Community Safety Partnerships, local authorities and the Probation Service.
“Our police officers and police staff continue to do their very best.”
Mr Arundale also said the force was facing some serious challenges but would not be reducing the number of police officers on the beat. But he added up to 165 other police jobs would be lost over the next four years.
It comes after research by the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary said there will be 34,000 fewer police jobs in England and Wales in March 2015 than in March 2010.
