Llansantffraid not giving up on GP surgery fight
Friday 22nd July 2011, 2:20PM BST.
Campaigners near the Shropshire/Powys border say they have not given up on a bid to save a GP surgery. Members of Llansantffraid Community Council say they still hope the surgery, due to close next month, can be saved.
Their comments come as one of the area’s Assembly Members said he was “alarmed” to learn about the plans. The Llanfyllin Group Practice announced in May it will no longer be running a general practice in Llansantffraid.
The decision means more than 800 residents in and around Llansantffraid will have to travel three miles to Four Crosses or six miles to Llanfyllin to see a doctor.
Doug Williams, chairman of Llansantffraid Community Council, said: “I am really keen to work with politicians to see if a better solution can be found.”
William Powell, Liberal Democrat AM for Mid and West Wales, said: “I am alarmed to hear that the surgery at Llansantffraid will soon be closing.”
The surgery’s Melanie Plant said today: “We realise the impact that our decision will have on patients, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, and to help alleviate this we have increased availability of routine appointments at our Four Crosses branch surgery and are in discussion with local businesses to provide a remote prescription delivery service.”
