£1,000 raised for Ruyton XI Towns church
Tuesday 19th July 2011, 12:45PM BST.
Villagers left “shocked” and “violated” after a tonne of lead was stolen from the roof of a church in Shropshire have rallied round to fundraise for a new one.
Members of Ruyton-XI-Towns have already collected more than £1,000 after holding a number of events to help re-roof St John the Baptist Church.
It was less than a month ago that the lead, which formed part of the valley guttering along the top of the roof, was taken.
It was discovered missing by the church vicar Reverend Les Foster last month, who believes it could cost between £10,000 and £15,000 to replace the materials.
The theft comes just five years after church-goers spent £50,000 to re-lead and fix it. But today church warden Stewart Ballantyne said the villagers have put their heads together to help raise cash to repair the roof.
He said: “I think the village felt quite shocked and a bit violated. It is their village church.”
He said the incident has seen people get into action to help.
“At the moment people are thinking of all sorts of ways to fundraise and people have given donations.
“It is a very unique situation.”
A tea party and gift day was held in the church and its grounds on Saturday which helped to raise £1,000.
