Newtown CCTV to remain switched off

A Mid Wales town’s CCTV system will remain switched off for the foreseeable future, with nobody taking responsibility for the running of the system.

Newtown’s CCTV system was installed following a spate of problems more than a decade ago, with the help of a Home Office grant.

It covered large parts of the town centre, particularly flashpoints in the commercial and social areas which had been hit by trouble.

But despite recent calls for it to be reactivated after incidents like the armed robbery in the town’s Nationwide Bank last December, the system will not be used.

Steve Geary, Newtown town clerk, said the system was originally run by the Community Safety Partnership, made up of police and council representatives, amongst others.

It was also monitored at County Hall in Llandrindod Wells, but cutbacks had meant they were no longer being watched.

He said: “When the cameras were originally set up, they were monitored by the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) at County Hall.

“But cutbacks have meant they were no longer being monitored and since the work started on Pryce Jones where the sender unit is positioned, it has been switched off.”

Well what amazies me is they pay for traffic wardens at what ever cost but cant be bothered to setup cameras which cost nothing to manage as if they stick in 24 hour video recorders in them.

Then when a incident happens they can rewind tapes to have a look… IT DOSENT TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST TO WORK THAT OUT OR COST THOUSANDS POUNDS TO DO IT..

As where i live i got video recorder on 24 hours a day and if amything happens people knock on my dorr to look at the footage and does help.
