Thieves constructed building site in attempted Telford cash machine raid

Thieves constructed a temporary building site around a supermarket cash machine in Telford before smashing shutters and attempting to cut it open.
Grey panelling was taken from a real building site across the road from the cashpoint outside the Co-op store in Limes Walk, Oakengates, last night.
Oakengates mayor Steve Wood contacted police after seeing the panelling surrounding the machine.
Police say the thieves were unsuccessful and fled the scene just after 9pm without any cash.
But the machine was today out of order.
Mr Wood said: “I was walking past the shop last night and noticed the panelling.
“I thought it looked very strange so poked my head through a gap.
“It looked as though the roller shutter covering the machine had been hacked away and you could see where they had tried to cut through the wall to get to the cash.
“You have to give it to them, it’s very brazen.
“Most people would have just walked past and not even thought anything about it and just assumed building work was going on.”
Denise Wakefield, spokeswoman for Telford police, said officers were following up on a number of leads in attempts to trace the thieves.
She said: “We had a call last night at 9pm following an attempt to steal the cash machine in Oakengates.
“The shop was closed at the time and the attempt was unsuccessful.
“We are carrying out a number of inquiries, including studying CCTV footage of the area.
“We would appeal for anyone with information to call us on 0300 333 3000.”
