Scrap Wakeman School closure plea
Saturday 16th July 2011, 11:38AM BST.
Governors at a closure-threatened Shropshire secondary school today called for the shutdown to be scrapped, claiming council education officers had made “fundamental” errors.
Andy Rayment, chairman of governors at the Wakeman School and Arts College in Shrewsbury, said pupils were being told they would be “guaranteed” a place at Meole Brace School Science College. But he claimed this was “simply not true”.
He said parents and pupils had been misled by public notices, claiming at least one of the year groups at Meole Brace would be full, meaning some Wakeman pupils would not be able to transfer. Shropshire Council said it was aware of the complaint.
A second consultation period is currently under way over the planned closure, after concerns were raised during the initial process that some details in public notices “could be considered ambiguous”.
A decision is now expected to be made at a meeting of Shropshire Council’s cabinet on September 7.
Mr Rayment said: “Throughout the process council officers have said that pupils from the school would be guaranteed a place at Meole Brace School. This is not true. Meole Brace School will be full for some or all of the year groups involved in the transition.
“Parents and pupils have been misled by council officials. Councillors have been given incorrect information during the decision-making process.”
Mr Rayment said he had written to the council to outline his concerns.
He added: “We are determined to challenge every avenue possible and to take it as far as necessary to save the school.”
A spokeswoman for Shropshire Council said today: “We have received the complaint and are responding directly in full.
“The public notice has been republished as part of our commitment to clarity and listening to all the points raised.
“No decision has been taken at this stage and we would urge people to submit statements as part of the statutory consultation.”

Rumour has it that Meole have ordered Portacabins to deal with the potential extra pupils. How is that a good thing?

Funny how, in the justification for closing Wakeman Shropshire Council claims that there’s lots of space at Meole Brace for Wakeman students without the need for expansion – and yet Shropshire Council admissions team are claiming that some year groups are already full and Meole Brace has demountable classrooms on order….doesn’t add up does it. What a surprise. There’s something fishy going on.
