English Defence League plans protest on match day

The English Defence League could stage a demonstration in Telford on the same day as the town’s football team kicks off its league campaign at home to Luton Town.

The organisation had its beginnings in Luton.

An events page on Facebook says a national march is planned in Telford on August 13, with about 390 people claiming they will attend.

A similar protest held in Luton earlier this year attracted thousands of EDL supporters including a number of activists from groups in France, the Netherlands and Germany.

West Mercia Police today confirmed it was aware a march could take place.

A spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the possibility of a march in Telford in August and there will be sufficient officers to respond appropriately to any issues arising.”

Unite Against Fascism, a group launched to fight racism and fascism across the country, has also confirmed it will be in Telford on the day. Members of AFC Telford United’s unofficial forum Buck’s Chat have raised concerns over policing on the day and fears that trouble could impact on the club’s first game of the season.

A comment on the forum said: “We play Luton on the same day. Think the police might be busy.”

Another user said: “Don’t want anything to do with this and we don’t want them turning up at the NBH (New Bucks Head).”

The march featured on website Casuals United Blog, allegedly used by EDL members.
