Powys schools shake-up on hold

Plans for a major schools shake-up in Powys could be put on hold because of funding cuts, it has been revealed. Powys County Council is reviewing primary and secondary schools in a radical bid to revamp county’s education.

The review forms part of the Schools Modernisation Programme, aimed at assisting the authority in making all its schools fit for purpose.

The authority was due to begin its review of the Welshpool catchment area in September but it has now been forced to put it on hold because of funding issues.

It comes after Welsh Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews announced on Wednesday that the Welsh Assembly would be asking all authorities to review their 21st century schools bids because of reduced capital funding.

It comes after Welsh Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews announced on Wednesday that the Welsh Assembly would be asking all authorities to review their 21st century schools bids because of reduced capital funding.

Councillor Stephen Hayes, the council’s cabinet member for learning and leisure, said funding cuts would have an affect on hopes to build new school buildings in the county.

But he said it would not stop the council pushing ahead with modernisation plans and the next stage for secondary and post-16 modernisation would be announced later this year.

He said: “The minister’s announcement is extremely disappointing and will have a significant impact on the county council’s ability to back its school modernisation initiatives with new buildings.

“With regard to secondary and post-16 modernisation, the challenges of surplus places and ensuring our youngsters have appropriate curriculum choice remain.”
