Motorists using one of Shrewsbury’s busiest roads are likely to face disruption this autumn when roadworks take place on the latest stage of a scheme to improve cycling and pedestrian routes.

Work is planned to take place in Smithfield Road around its junction with Raven Meadows as part of the Sustrans Connect2 project.

Officials have vowed that much of the work will take place in the evenings to minimise disruption.

It is hoped the work will start after the Shrewsbury Flower Show next month and be finished before the Christmas shopping season.

Alison Kennedy, transport planner at Shropshire Council, said that the tender process was to run until the beginning of August.

“We are hoping to start work in September if there is a successful tender,” she said.

“Because it is in the town centre, we want to minimise disruption so work will have to be done overnight. We are expecting it is a couple of months of work on something that will be there for many years to come.

“Some work will take place during the day time but it will be traffic sensitive.”

Under the proposals, a wider pavement between the boxing gym and Severn Terrace is to be created to provide a shared use route for walking and cycling, while a new entrance to the bus station is also proposed.

Two toucan crossings will also be added across Raven Meadows and Smithfield Road to give pedestrians and cyclists an improved crossing place.

Having already slowed trafic with the alterations near the Welsh bridge we now have more crossings & narrowing of the road.
The town center is becoming a “no go” area for through traffic.
It should be no surprise that the out of town shopping centers are expanding to the detriment of the town center.

Shrewsbury is the best town I have ever known for cyclists. Hurrah! But could we have a pedestrian crossing on Wyle Cop please.

whats the point of causing disruption to motorists and the local bus services by once again making cycle routes when the existing ones arent used anyway, and yet more traffic lights….how many sets do they want on Smithfield Road when the existing ones are a complete and utter waste of time and money

Ok I’m a bit confused here. Isn’t this road subject to potential redevelopment through the ‘New Riverside’ project? Is there not the danger of roads being dug up and millions spent only for it to be redeveloped in 2013 following the Shrearer Property Group’s grand plan? Hmmm. Maybe a question to ask them as the consultation starts on ‘New Riverside starts today!

With schools being closed, jobs lost we now have found another mad brained spending scheme.
Where is this money coming from?
A cyclist to be seen in this area is a rare occasion. Just like the obstruction already there, no pedestrian is ever seen crossing.
When the next election is due let us make sure we remove these Councillors who pass such works.

If the cyclists use the cycle lane then great. If not fine them.
This goes for all people on peddle bike including “Roadies”!!!!!

I’m with Benbow Tom on this one. Will all this work be dug up again when the Riverside is redesigned?
