Oswestry Powis Hall market revamp will begin next month
Monday 11th July 2011, 3:46PM BST.
Work should begin on the revamp of Oswestry’s indoor market next month, whether a prize worth the equivalent of £50,000 of advice from design company My Deco is forthcoming or not.
Town officials have revealed they want to start work on the Powis Hall even though they are still waiting to hear what the prize contribution will be.
Town clerk David Preston said the town council hoped work would start on August 1.
The building on the Bailey Head won the online voting competition in The Times newspaper to help with face-lift plans.
The prize was £50,000 to be given in kind – the estimated cost of the advice from designer Sir Terence Conran and materials.
The town council is now keen to see the project start moving. The work was put out to tender earlier this year and five bids were made by local companies.
Although the council has not revealed who won the contract it says it wants to look at decoration materials and complete paperwork..
David Clough, retail markets manager at Oswestry town council, said: “We are waiting for confirmation from My Deco about what their contribution is going to be and how soon they can send us materials. We don’t want it to be delayed any more.
“We are keen as a town council to get it done by the end of the year.
“We realise it has been two years now, a long time.”
It is thought the revamp will take around 16 weeks to complete.

What is actually going to be done to the market, is it just a coat of paint and some pictures, or major work being carried out.
Would be nice to have the designs on show for us to see or comment on.
