Oswestry leisure centre opening delayed until September
Monday 11th July 2011, 3:44PM BST.
The opening of Oswestry’s new leisure centre has been delayed until mid September. The £8 million Active Oswestry centre is being built in Shrewsbury Road.
But it is now about a year behind schedule.
The last announcement was that the centre would open last month but now the date has been moved to “mid September”.
Costs have soared since the centre, originally named Oswald Park, was first mooted by the former Oswestry Borough Council.
And the economic climate had also meant that Shropshire Council has had to cut some of the facilities first envisaged.
Active Oswestry will provide the town with new sports and leisure facilities, a 25-metre swimming pool and a fitness suite.
Shropshire Councillor Steve Charmley said the latest delay was due to problems putting in the electricity.
He said: “It will be a mid September opening. I’m sure anyone who’s driven past will have seen how fantastic the leisure centre is looking.
“It’s been a long hard road to get here, following the complications of having to appoint a new contractor, but it will be well worth the wait.
“As with all large projects, there have been a number of challenges and issues that have presented themselves along the way, and we are currently having some complications with the electricity supply. But we’re confident they will be ironed out and will not significantly affect the planned opening of the centre in the autumn.”
The current centre on land close by was said to have a 25-year lifespan when it was opened in the early 1970s and has struggled on for an extra decade.
