Letter: Leave Shropshire’s carnivals alone, councillor
Saturday 9th July 2011, 12:12PM BST.
Letter: In response to Martin Taylor-Smith, a councillor of Ludlow, informing the townsfolk of Shrewsbury that they should move the carnival from Saturday to a Sunday (Letters, June 22), what audacity.
If you could take the time to be part of the Shrewsbury scene, you would have consulted with our Shropshire and town councillors to find out the facts before trying to gain media notoriety.
Carnivals have differing days for their events, some during the week, and others at the weekend. Shrewsbury carnival has for decades been on a Saturday because Shrewsbury people want their carnival on a Saturday.
Shrewsbury Carnival is held on a Saturday once a year, and if he (or any of his compatriots) supported this event, he would realise Shrewsbury town is full of local people supporting the event. The carnival actually brings people into the town.
I acknowledge some of the roads in the town centre ha- ve to be closed off while the floats and procession bring fun and excitement to our streets. The people of Shre- wsbury and surrounding areas provide great support by participating or watching the event at no cost – and in doing so put something back into the local community.
People of all ages and backgrounds support the Shrewsbury carnival willingly and donate to whichever charity is supported. Please do not dictate to Shrewsbury people what they can or cannot do.
This is not aimed at the people of Ludlow, I have many friends in the area.
