Review of Sunday parking for Shrewsbury

Sunday car parking charges in Shrewsbury are to be reviewed after council bosses held talks with business leaders to encourage more people to shop in the town.
Traders today described Monday night’s meeting as positive as they look for ways to promote the town more. Business leaders who attended the meeting also said they would look at offering parking refunds to customers who make purchases in their stores.
The meeting followed a U-turn from Shropshire Council chiefs earlier this month over proposals to increase on-street parking charges in the town.
The plans would have seen increases of 10p for an hour, 20p for more than an hour and 30p for over an hour-and-a-half at a number of pay and display parking bays in the town.
But the proposals were slammed by traders as “idiotic” and quickly shelved, along with plans to bring in a similar rise in charges in Ludlow.
Monday night’s meeting was attended by Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, and Peter Nutting, head of Shrewsbury Town Council, who met with representatives from the Shropshire Enterprise Partnership, Destination Shrewsbury and Shop in the Loop to discuss ways in which the town can be better promoted.
