County farmer Margaret Deakin was crowned the 2011 “Pride of Shropshire” last night – and immediately showed why she deserved the title by donating her winnings to charity.
The tearful 60-year-old, from Bouldon in the shadow of the Brown Clee hills, picked up the champion’s trophy at the annual community awards ceremony in Shrewsbury, as well as being voted good neighbour of the year.
She immediately donated her £750 prize money to the County Air Ambulance, getting a standing ovation from the capacity audience after telling how it had recently helped to save two of her close friends. “One had an accident, and the other was taken ill, and their lives were saved by the Air Ambulance. This is just a very small gesture to say thank-you.”
Margaret farms a 200-acre livestock business on her own, but still finds time to serve as a councillor, organise the main entertainment for Burwarton Show, and assist with a string of other community events.
“I’m really shocked and shaken a little bit,” she said. “I didn’t expect to win my category, let alone the overall prize. I feel very humbled, and very unworthy of this.”
