Oswestry family’s bruising treatment by News of the World
Friday 8th July 2011, 10:30AM BST.
An Oswestry mother today spoke of her family’s “bruising” treatment at the hands of the News of the World when they were thrown into the glare of the national media spotlight.
Jools Payne said today she and her family were hounded by the newspaper’s staff after the News of the World found out her son Max, who was 17 at the time, was the boyfriend of murdered Oswestry schoolgirl Frankie McFall.
Frankie was murdered by her father Hugh McFall, along with her mother Susan, in February last year in a killing spree which shocked Oswestry.
Hugh McFall then killed himself.
Mrs Payne said the News of the World made repeated attempts to contact Max, even hiding in bushes at Frankie’s school.

But that is a far cry from the phone hacking which has brought down the tabliod.

“But that is a far cry from the phone hacking which has brought down the tabliod.”
No it’s not – it’s just another example of the methods used by this squalid little rag.
A sad reflection on our country when it’s the country’s biggest-selling “newspaper”.

The point I was making in my blog – which has been picked up by many on Twitter and led to this piece but which is not referenced here – is that the culture of the News of the World newsroom has not changed a jot, despite senior NotW staff’s protestations in the media yesterday that it had since the hacking of Milly Dowler’s mobile.

I have higher standards for my budgie than employ the Sun On Sunday. Let’s hope for a short and brutal life for this cynical rag, a speedy and thorough inquiry into News International’S machinations followed by arrests and convictions if necessary for those involved. A one way ticket for the Murdoch family out of British public life would also wrap the matter up nicely.

I agree the sooner Murdoch’s Conservative supporting papers vanish from the the UK the better. What people/companies need to do now is boycott all other titles in the group and that should do the job.
He backed the Tories as he wanted control of BskyB,Dave c admitted he wanted Murdoch’s help to try to win the election, now it looks set to blow up in his face.
I would not read a Murdoch title if it was given to me free.

Only in Shropshire could somebody complain about the press……. by speaking to the press..classic!

Yes, they look bruised. They are clearly reluctant to be back in the media spotlight…even if it is only the Shropshire Star! I’m sure that the McCall’s wider family and true friends will welcome this non-story too.

Let me get this right. She complains about the media and then she bleats out to the Shropshire Star and Radio Shropshire.
A phrase involving a kettle,a pot and a shade comes to mind.

Hi Alex
Regrettably, you have missed the point entirely.
See above reply to Andrew.

Unless I’ve missed something this lady is questioning the claim that national newspapers have ‘cleaned’ up their act over their last 5 to 6 years.
The harrassment she and her family experienced at a time of grief was clearly stressful and hurtful. God forbid anything like this should affect me but this piece certainly makes me think about how I would like to be treated, or more to the point wouldn’t!
I do not think she is bleating or seeking any form of attention here, moreover she is offering valid comment at this time when the activity of the press is being questioned.
please take the time to read the full blog piece.
