Shropshire’s Shanna off to LA YouTube convention

Wednesday 6th July 2011, 9:44AM BST.

A Shropshire teenager has become one of only nine people in the UK to be invited to a prestigious YouTube convention in a five-star Los Angeles hotel.

Shanna May will leave her home in Trench, Telford, next month to head for California where she will be mixing with YouTube video makers from across the world.

The 19-year-old, who is a visual artist, began making videos to put on YouTube to show people how to paint, draw and take part in other forms of art.

The number of people who subscribed to her videos rocketed and soon she had 2,000 followers, at which point YouTube started paying her for her work.

The former Sutherland School pupil is now nearing 3,000 followers and that number is growing.

The aim of the convention is for other YouTube video makers to meet and share ideas.

“There’s going to be comedians and other artists there and everyone who creates online content,” she said.

“We will talk about how we can get even more people to watch us. It all started by me watching people on YouTube and then I noticed the hundreds of thousands of people watching them every day and they were getting paid a wage for it.

“So I started putting up videos of me painting and it went from there. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and staying in the five-star hotel.”

Shanna, who will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in California, is currently studying for a foundation degree in art and design at Wolverhampton University.
