Plans for 250 Shrewsbury homes a step nearer

Controversial plans to build up to 250 homes in Shrewsbury have moved a step closer.

Persimmon Homes North West has submitted outline plans to Shropshire Council for a site in Shillingston Drive, Battlefield, including 50 “affordable” homes.

Managing director Neil Follows said: “We have confidence in the Shropshire housing market and believe that our site will make a significant contribution towards addressing the housing need in Shrewsbury.

“Our proposals will deliver 250 family homes, including a number of affordable properties, as well as creating new local employment opportunities.”

Under the proposals, 30 per cent of the houses will have solar panels to provide a renewable energy source.

The company had planned to build 300 homes on the site but this has been lowered to 250.

But opponents claim the homes are unsuitable.

Jane Strouts, of Berwick and Battlefield Residents’ Group, said: “We don’t want this to be considered at all.”

She said residents in Battlefield felt the area was facing a large number of contentious plans, including the possible expansion of Tesco and an incinerator.

The Berwick Estate was built on greenfield land and now its residents are complaining that the neighbouring greenfield land is to be built on.

I remember when the estate was built, about 10 years ago, the plot now under consideration was clearly “phase two” of the development. I’m surprised it wasn’t built on in the mid-00s.

What concerns me, is not just the additional houses that will be built, but have they actually considered the additional traffic it will generate in that area? The roads around Battlefield / Harlescott already struggle to cope with the existing traffic levels. The whole infrasturcture in the area would need to be upgraded to be able to cope with this number of additional houses.

So according to ‘ neil fellows’ they’re building the homes just to help out a housing shortage?!? How charitable. This is another huge mistake in the overdevelopment of the town and it’s environs. I hope, but find it unlikely, the Council planners will not allow this to go ahead.

Granted Berwick Grange was built on greenfield site but the density of phase two, as David calls it is far greater than phase one. It is doubtful that so many houses are necessary in this area, as the properties on the old Davenport site are yet to be sold. There is a perfectly good windfall site that should be built on. (the old tesco) site. Do we really need to loose anymore greenfield when all brown and windfall sites look so untidy and bring are county down.

I hope they do not get permission due to lots of reasons. The proposed access to the new development is opposite a childrens play area which is worrying for the safety of children The local wildlife will also be affected. The land which is planned to be developed has not gone through the planning procedures adhered to by Shropshire council. Land should be considered with land from different areas to see which is the most suitable. Please keep berwick Grange as it

I have lived on Battlefield Road for over 20 years, the traffic in the last few years has become awful, the tesco store/new d.i.y store and the sunday market has made the traffic lights by JCB very congested and often traffic backs up as far as the battlefield roundabout on weekends, more houses means more and more traffic!! and like someone has already commented there are relatively new houses already built on Battlefield road that are still EMPTY, burgerking/pub/garage etc off the battlefield roundabout, has all added to the congestion and what with the proposed new incinerator, it wont be long before i carnt even get off my drive, and neither will the residents and NEW residents of Berwick Grange.they will have wished they never moved here!!!.
