Outline planning permission to be issued for Oswestry superstore
Monday 4th July 2011, 2:53PM BST.
Outline planning permission for Oswestry’s new supermarket is due to be formally issued this week – but it could be months before any work actually gets under way on the site.
Shropshire Council chiefs say developers Liberty Mercian will have to follow strict planning rules before they can start any phase of the huge multi-million development at Oswestry’s Smithfield livestock site.
And the council also revealed today that a public inquiry to determine two unsuccessful rival store bids could be held in two months.
The Liberty Mercian bid will see a supermarket, 900-seat multi-screen cinema, restaurants and office space built on the Shrewsbury Road livestock market site.
The project will also see the market revamped and, through the terms of a Section 106 agreement, bring a park and ride shuttle bus and more than £250,000 road improvements.
Councillors last month gave the go-ahead to the plans after agreeing the terms of the 106 planning agreement. But the unitary council said the developer would now have to get detailed planning approval for each phase of the massive project.
Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said: “All detailed submissions must be made within five years.
“Once work does begin the developer must also ensure that they abide by the conditions attached to the planning consent, and to the terms of the Section 106 agreement.”
Although Liberty Mercian won Oswestry’s Store Wars, two rival bids which were refused planning approval remain unresolved.
Timber firm Richard Burbidge Ltd and car firm JT Hughes have since appealed against their refusals.
