Onibury village fete delayed by licence mistake
Friday 1st July 2011, 3:48PM BST.
A south Shropshire village fete has been postponed for more than two months after organisers admitted they had forgotten to apply for events licences in time.
Onny Fete and Parade, which raised more than £2,000 for the under-threat village school last year, will now take place on September 25, instead of July 10.
Disappointed organisers, who have been planning the event since January, said they had left it too late to submit applications to have alcohol and entertainment at the party, as they only submitted the applications two days after Shropshire Council’s final deadline. They had been expecting to attract about 800 revellers to the village.
Laura Watton, from the Friends Of Onny School, said: “It was an oversight by us, which made it impossible to get the alcohol and entertainment licences in time.
“We were out by two days from their deadline, from which they can’t budge. We did try to ask them, but they won’t change from the rules.”
The party is designed to raise cash for the Friends of Onny School.
Janet Giles, chairman of the Friends, said: “Our motto is ‘every year, bigger and better’ and without these licences in place we would not have been able to achieve that.”
The schedule of activities, including a dog show, a tug-of-war, Onny’s Got Talent competition, entertainers, and a DJ, have all been postponed until September.
