Ludlow not-for-profit waste firm goes into business
Friday 1st July 2011, 5:52PM BST.
Bosses of a not-for-profit Ludlow company today unveiled £120,000 plans for a new waste recycling service for town businesses.
South Shropshire Furniture Scheme hopes to start collecting paper and cardboard from shops and traders within months.
Two jobs will be created.
The social enterprise company, which launched in 1994, said Shropshire Council had pledged £42,000 to help it launch the new venture, provided it can iron out the fine details of its business plan.
Chief executive Jean Jarvis said: “We’ll use that money to buy a van to collect cardboard and paper and buy a small forklift truck and a cardboard bailer.
“It’s going to be a few months until it’s up and running as we have to secure premises for the recycling and get ourselves organised, but it is a very exciting time for us.”
Ms Jarvis said: “The whole idea is that we will cut out a lot of the carbon needed to recycle, by doing the whole operation locally, cutting the need for lorries to travel long distances.
“It will create two part-time jobs to begin with, and if the scheme is successful these could either become full-time or we could appoint more people.”
It will be a paid-for service, with all money made being ploughed back into the project.

Hoorah! As a Ludlow business owner that would be the best news ever. At least two-thirds of our rubbish that goes to landfill is paper and cardboard. Well done Jean!
