Letter: Six pounds to park? I won’t visit Shrewsbury again

Letter: I had a lovely few hours shopping in Shrewsbury town centre on a Sunday recently.

I parked in the multi-storey, and planned on shopping for a couple of hours. I had a lovely lunch at Alayners Sandwich Bar in Riverside and bought a few bits and bobs.

I got back to my car, without realising I had just gone over the three hours. Wow! What an expensive mistake: £6 yes £6 to park my car for just over three hours.

Needless to say it will be the last time I shop in Shrewsbury town centre. What I bought would have been cheaper off the internet and paying the postage.

So, may I say, Shrewsbury town centre rest in peace.

R Barnes who lives in Shrewsbury!

    Why not walk in then?

Harlescott is classed as being “in Shrewsbury” Mark. A long walk from the town centre with a couple of bags of shopping don’t you think?

      • David

Buses (which I know are expensive in Shrewsbury) run to Harlescott on Sundays. And to many other parts of the town.

      • mark

I assume you are using Harlescott as an example – i didnt read it in the article.
the parking charges are clearly shown though so it’s the individuals choice to either pay up or park elsewhwere / use parn and ride / taxi etc.
imagine if we all wrote in to complain that we didnt realise how expensive petrol was after we filled up.

    • katie

or catch the bus which travels in and around the shrewsbury area..

      • Shropshire Lass

If the buses were reasonably priced, regular and reliable more people would use them. It is actually cheaper for me and my husband who live in Harlescott to get a taxi into town than both paying for the bus.

      • Alex

Are those the same buses they announced they are cutting the evening and weekend services on today?

R Barnes didn’t complain about the cost of petrol, the sandwiches, the bits and bobs – which will all have risen in cost at some point – all of which I am sure were paid for without moaning.

If you park anywhere in any town or city it costs a packet, next time park at Abbey foregate and walk in, it costs about £3.50 all day! The walk over the English bridge is lovely, I lived in Leeds and parking right in the City would cost about £10.00 a day!!

    • susie

why not park in asda car park for free like the 50 odd cars do every day you will need 2 get a space by 8.30 am though worth it 2 save 17.50 a week.

I parked in Leeds City Centre recently for £5 a day under the railway arches right in th centre. Not so much more expensive than Shrewsbury

      • Alex Wright

To carry on the comparison with cities, there are car parks on the edge of, for example, Birmingham city centre where you can park all day for £2 or £3 – though admittedly they’re often just some unpaved, derelict land that’s been declared a car park.

Yeah classy lunches are plentiful in the riverside!?

Unfortunately its still cheaper to pay Telfords parking charges and the cost of fuel than go down Shrewsbury hence Telfords thriving and Shrewsburys flagging!

I’d love to know where you are finding this bargain fuel Lee.

Moaning about the cost of parking in Shrewsbury seems very fashionable just now, not to mention utterly boring.

I got caught out in Chester, cost me £9.50 for 3 hours, want be doing that again either.

I used to always shop in Shrewsbury, but cannot actually remember the last time I went there – purely due to the high parking charges. A lot of my friends have stopped shopping in Shrewsbury too for the same reason.

Before this writer moans too much Try paying to park in your own street because the majority has been double yellowed and ‘ shoppers’ have parked in residential sidestreets. That’s why I moved further out.

These people who aren’t prepared to pay the recent parking charge rises, are surely no great loss to the town. I cannot imagine they are going to be buying much, apart from over priced sandwiches, ironically.

People pay a lot for a car + road tax+MOT + Insurance etc etc, not to mention being ripped off with parking charges, so they can have the convenience of driving their car into town.

If you wanted to go on the bus or train, why would you even bother to have a car?

Reading some of these comments makes me think owning a car is a sin in the UK these days.

I don’t understand the fuss. Regardless of the destination, as long as it’s a town centre, wife & I know we’ll use fuel & know we’ll pay for premium parking. If we choose to park in town centre multi-story we know it’ll cost more than a park & walk, say from Abbey Foregate to town centre, or the park & ride.

We make our choices according to our agenda, our reason for going to town, be it a relaxed ‘mooch’ through the side streets or a full-on head-down mall-fest, and get on with it!

I don’t read any blogs about the price of coffee, or the cost of a sandwich or a Pizza slice keeping people from the town centre but all these have risen too and we, as often as not, will stuggle to the coffe bar bending under the weight of our shopping & spend £8 on a coffee & sandwich & then moan that we have spent £6 (for example) on car parking.

Get over it. Budget for it. Don’t be suprised.

I would rather go in by bus to a town centre than pay parking charges.

Don’t the councils and owners of local shopping centres (i.e. Telford) realise they are killing off trade?

Get a bike, the town centre is only 10 minutes at most and it is a nice cycle along the river to the town centre. No traffic either. Unless you are buying a wardrobe, you can manage with a small rutsack or panniers.

No parking charges in Wellington. It has the biggest and best market in Shropshire.

Matt, totally agree. Two hours free parking then low charges after that. I also agree that the market is good as well as traditional.

As I have said many times, anybody who pays to park in Shrewsbury on a Sunday is plain stupid. Try Coton Hill by the river FREE!! Victoria Ave. FREE.!!On street parking at the side of the Swimming Baths. FREE.!! Roushill single yellow lines FREE.!! All on street designated parking bays FREE.!! Around the Abbey FREE.!! On street parking in Frankwell FREE.!! Porthill FREE.!! I could go on. What amazes me is the writer lives in Shrewsbury.

But John, if someone wants to buy a heavy item or a very delicate item from a shop in the centre of Shrewsbury, would they want to risk taking it on the park and ride or have to carry it one or two miles to the free on street parking? Probably not.

      • JOHN JONES

MATT, Some of the free places I have pointed out are yards from the centre of Shrewsbury and not as you say miles, one I have mentioned (Roushill)is only yards from the car park. There is no park and ride service on a Sunday.

I always cycle into the town centre, along the old canal path at Sundorne, and then following the river from Sydney Avenue to the Quarry.

I’ve cycled it for 30 years, and enjoy it every time, my small items of shopping fit easily into the bike baskets, and, as there is usually no deadline to meet, I can sit by the weir and read my newspaper

The parking charges are disgusting and cant imagine why a lot of people are saying it is ok to charge the amount they do. The whole country is going down the pan, shops shutting left right and centre and people loosing their jobs. It can only get worse.

See the article today about bus services, a number of which serve Shrewsbury, being cut at evenings and weekends (when it is most expensive to park or you are likely to park for longer)

Council saw this one coming didn’t they?

And I bet all you ‘I only use the bus’ commentors are a bit quiet now. You’ll only be able to visit during the working day!

    • Martin

Wrong. Charges stop at 6pm (used to be 8pm), and buses affected are in the evening, after this time. Sunday services also affected.

For goodness sake, it’s FREE to park in the town centre on a Sunday! Lots of spaces and if there isn’t one immediately, drive round once and you’ll find one. I know-I live in the centre and have NEVER not found a space on a Sunday, whatever time of day. Multi storey car parks are renowned for being expensive, across the country: you’re paying for the supposed security: choose this, or ‘risk’ town centre where it’s FREE! End of, please!
