New arrest after death of Shropshire pensioner
Thursday 30th June 2011, 1:13PM BST.
A 25-year-old man was today arrested on suspicion of murdering an Oswestry pensioner. The arrest follows the death of 87-year-old Charles Green at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on June 2.
Mr Green died a month after being assaulted by intruders who broke into his home in Ambleside Road.
He had remained in hospital following the assault during the early hours of May 2, having received head, hip and arm injuries.
Two men were arrested on the day of the incident.
One has made a preliminary appearance before Shrewsbury Crown Court charged with entering Mr Green’s home as a trespasser and subjecting him to violence.
He is currently remanded in custody.
A second man is on police bail pending further inquiries.
Detective Inspector Mick Homden, the senior investigating officer, today said: “I can confirm that a 25-year-old man was this morning arrested on suspicion of murder.
“He has been taken to Shrewsbury police station and will be questioned in custody about Mr Green’s death.
“Our inquiries into the circumstances of Mr Green’s death are continuing.
“At this stage, I can make no further comment about today’s arrest or the ongoing police investigation.”
A postmortem examination was conducted on Mr Green by a Home Office pathologist.
The pensioner woke to find the raiders searching through his house in the early hours of May 2.
Mr Green was left with bleeding on the brain, a double fracture to his left hip socket, a severely swollen and split ear and bruising to the back of his neck and his arms.
