Council ‘sorry’ over Maurice Chandler Sports Centre report
Thursday 30th June 2011, 1:08PM BST.
Bosses of a charity-run sports centre in north Shropshire have received an apology from councillors who admitted a two-year-old report claiming it was not “fit for purpose” was out of date.
A report commissioned by Shropshire Council claimed the Maurice Chandler Sports Centre in Stoke Heath near Market Drayton could close in the future which was met with anger from bosses.
But at yesterday’s cabinet meeting council members apologised if the report had caused offence to anyone associated with the centre and said they would support the facility in the future.
Centre chairman Pete Waters said he was delighted with the outcome of yesterday’s meeting and said they can now move on.
He said: “It was a very constructive meeting. The council admitted to the report being out of date and apologised if it caused offence to anyone.
“They allowed us to put our side of things to them and agreed to support us.”
The report was produced by Strategic Leisure who said it visited the centre before the report was written 18 months to two years ago.
Councillor Steve Charmley, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “It was made clear during the cabinet meeting that we very much support how the centre is being run.”

They should publish a report on this. Be ready by, oh, 2015 or so?
