Prince Charles visits Machynlleth
Tuesday 28th June 2011, 1:24PM BST.
Hundreds of people lined the streets of a Mid Wales town to see Prince Charles as he took a tour around an award-winning centre.
The prince arrived at the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education at the Centre for Alternative Technology yesterday where he met schoolchildren and staff as part of his week-long tour of Wales.
Charles took a tour around the centre, which is based on the edge of Snowdonia National Park.
During his visit to the centre, which was started in a disused slate quarry almost four decades ago, he took a ride on the centre’s water-powered train, then went on to meet a group of children on a school activity day.
He also met the centre’s two gardeners and spoke to them about organic gardening.
A spokesman for the centre said: “The prince met Chloe Ward and Katie Hastings, who are both gardeners at the centre, and had a good chinwag on the subject of organic gardening.
“The prince has always had an interest in organic gardening and farming and he was obviously in his element.”
From there he was introduced to Trish Andrews, a lecturer at the centre who specialises in sustainable architecture.
The prince left to return to his Welsh farm, Llwynywermod, in Myddfai, Carmarthenshire, where he is staying during his week-long tour.
In the farm’s thatched barn, the prince last night hosted a reception for one of his highest-profile projects, the Cambrian Mountain Initiative, which aims to promote rural enterprise and add value to a host of locally-sourced products and services.
The Duchess of Cornwall was expected to begin touring in tandem with the prince today.
