Blog: There’s more to life than what you weigh

Blog: It certainly seems Royal-fever has swept the nation, the world even, and the media spotlight is firmly fixed on our next generation of young Royals – glued, in fact, to their every move.
So it’s a good thing the Royal family seem to have finally found their groove and with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge having captured the imagination of the world it’s refreshing to see them lifting our international profile in a positive direction for once.
But there are some negative aspects to it all, and listening to showbiz pundits fawning over Princess Beatrice’s “new bikini body” definitely ranks up there as one of them.
Haven’t we just spent the last decade or so trying to reverse the size zero culture, where young girls – and boys according to latest figures – feel their worth solely judged on dress size – the smaller the better?
We have girls with anorexia, boys with bulimia, catwalk models keeling over on stage, expiring of heart failure caused by malnutrition. . . and yet we still fall over ourselves to praise the princess for dropping two dress sizes when she was a mere size 12 to start with.
I don’t know much – if anything – about children, but one thing I do know is you must be very careful what you say around the little critters. The smallest thing, the tiniest throwaway comment could be the one that starts a complex and though that’s nothing new, it must be that much more intense in this celebrity-obsessed age.
Imagine what it’s like to grow up now, to go through the angst of puberty bombarded by images of the skinny-ribbed, starving beauties laughingly labelled as the “girl-next-door look”.
And though promises were made to bring back curvier models and stop airbrushing magazine photos of less-than-perfect celebrities, it certainly seems now to have been nothing more than a box-ticking exercise.
How can we complain about the over sexualisation of youngsters and condemn those starving for a size zero figure when we continue to aide and abet such unhealthy trends in the first place by gobbling up the media obsession with weight, dress sizes and slimming techniques.
I’ll bet that Princess Beatrice has achieved much more in the last three years than simply shaving off a bit of baby fat (OK, excluding That Hat at William and Kate’s wedding), so why waste so many column inches cooing over her rapidly shrinking Royal behind?
I just hope that, for her, the weight-loss has been a healthy and planned process rather than the first signs she may have inherited more than just upper class lineage from her mother, the Duchess of York – renowned for her tortured past, troubled present and propensity for yo-yo dieting.
Surely we have better hopes and dreams for our children than that?
