Thousands of people lined the streets in Shifnal on Saturday afternoon for town’s annual carnival parade.

More than 3,000 people lined the streets to watch colourful floats and marching bands parade for the annual Shifnal Carnival.

Organisers today said the weather was kind to them for the event on Saturday and a great time was had by all, despite a drop in the number of floats that took part.

Pupils from Shifnal Primary School were jumping for joy after their large Peter Pan float was named the overall winner and best comical float winner.

And, as it was announced that legendary comedian Ken Dodd would open this year’s Shifnal Festival as the headline act, organisers came up with their own eye-catching tribute.

In honour of the 83-year-old’s arrival, festival organisers paraded around the town on a float at the carnival dressed as Dodd and his famous Diddymen.

The comedian agreed to perform at the festival on September 13 as a personal favour to one of its organisers, Tony Stringfellow.

Mr Stringfellow said: “I’ve been working with Ken for more than 20 years, creating stage props, masks and puppets for him.

“When I rang, he said he’d be delighted to play at Shifnal Festival because it’s providing just the sort of intimate audience he loves performing to.”

He added: “This will be a unique opportunity to get close to one of the biggest stage stars this country has ever produced.”

Angela Mullett, carnival chairman and treasurer, said: “Generally the day went well.”
