Severn Trent Oswestry works to take longer than expected

Part of Oswestry’s town centre will be blocked off for three weeks after Severn Trent today admitted sewer work on Bailey Head turned out to be “much more complicated” than first thought.

The firm has apologised to businesses and customers for the overrunning of the work.

And bosses have promised to do all they can to ensure the work does not affect the Bailey Head street markets.

Severn Trent spokesman Bobby Singh said: “What we had hoped would be a quick job turned out to be much more complicated.

“We were originally called to clear a blocked sewer, but on inspection we found concrete which had been poured down a drain was actually causing the blockage. A long section of the sewer now needs to be replaced.”

He added: “Our contractors, Enterprise, will need to close the passageway from Arthur Street leading into the square in Bailey Head for three weeks. During that time traffic will be diverted from Arthur Street to the rear of Guildhall Car Park.

“We’ll be working daily from 8am to 10pm to finish as quickly as possible, except on market days when we’ll wait to start until after 3.30pm to ensure the work interferes as little as possible with the market.”

Shropshire councillor Martin Bennett said he was concerned about the impact the work would have as the tourist season approached.
