Telford Sainsbury’s expansion to be decided next month

Plans by Sainsbury’s to expand its store in Telford, creating up to 80 full and part-time jobs, will now be decided on next month.

The store giant has applied to increase the size of its retail floor space at its Forge Retail Park store by almost 30 per cent – an increase of 73,000 sq ft.

Planning chiefs at Telford & Wrekin Council were expected to make a decision on the application last night, but instead decided to ask the firm for more information on the plans and deferred making a decision until July.

They have recommended refusal amid claims it could damage trade in Telford Town Centre.

Councillor Nigel Dugmore hoped the application would be agreed at the board’s next meeting: “We’re not talking about Sainsbury’s building a new site, we’re talking about an extension.”

Jane Piper, for Sainsbury’s, previously said the extension would allow it to offer new jobs and develop its home delivery service.

hmmm that’s strange, would they recommend refusal if it was near Wellington, Madeley or Oakengates? Where trade has undoubtedly been damaged by supermarkets and out of town shopping areas.

hmmm again, I agreed with Bob.

I also wonder what they would say if Tesco wanted to expand again!!

I firmly believe the main thing that damages trade at Telford Town Centre is the cost of parking.

Interesting that the proposals for the old Madeley Court school site include a supermarket, a few hundred yards away from the new Tesco’s. I wonder what they’ll have to say about that?

Meanwhile, the “regeneration” of Dawley includes a new supermarket at the north end of Paddock Mount – this is somehow going to increase trade in the High Street, where the biggest shop is the Co-op supermarket…..
