Bird watchers ‘risking lives’ to see osprey chicks

Bird watchers are risking their lives by walking along an active train line to try and get a closer look at osprey chicks which have hatched in Mid Wales, police said today.

People are walking along the train line near the Dyfi Osprey Centre in Derwenlas, near Machynlleth, in a bid to get closer to the nest.

Now Dyfed-Powys Police today warned people that as well as risking their lives on the track, they were also disturbing the birds in their nest.

Sergeant Matthew Howells, wildlife crime and environmental sergeant for the force, said: “Dyfed-Powys Police and British Transport Police are advising the public not to attempt to locate the osprey nesting ground in the Dyfi Estuary area.

“The Dyfi Osprey Project has been working tirelessly for the last three years to reintroduce the osprey bird to the area where they have not bred for over four years.

“The project hosts only the second breeding pair of ospreys in Wales and is therefore vital in the survival of the species in Wales and the UK. This year three chicks have successfully hatched out, not without incident though.

“Recent incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of the osprey to humans and it is therefore crucial to their survival that members of the public do not attempt to locate the nest.

“People are not only risking the future of these birds by disturbing them at their nesting sites, they are also risking their lives by walking along the railway tracks in an attempt to locate the nest.”
